Maria Cheriyan '21, under the guidance of Mrs. Jackie Riley the director of the Global Initiatives program, conducted over Zoom a website coding workshop with students from our sister schools; Kousen Catholic High School in Kousen, Japan, and Col.lego Mare de Déu del Carme in Terrassa, Spain. Over two sessions, Maria taught the concepts of HTML and CSS. None of the students had taken programming classes prior to the event and the workshop provided an important introduction to computer science. Participants learned how to create a website and become "HTML-literate" by parsing an already existing site. At the end of the workshop, each student made their own webpage complete with pictures, links, functional buttons, different fonts, a unique background image, and an interactive map showing their school.
Maria noted that not only was teaching over Zoom challenging but there was a bit of a language barrier. Maria knows some Japanese but is not fluent in Spanish. The students spoke English well and Maria provided slides and additional material for the students to go through at their own pace after the session. She also used Atom a text editor app for coding to assist in teaching the lesson. Overall she was able to form cross-cultural connections with the students and seeing the finished websites was a really rewarding experience.
