Scholarship Application
Generously given by Lev Wood '74, The Endowed Scholarship for Civic Engagement supports a current Junior from Detroit Country Day School who has demonstrated a meaningful commitment to local government, public service, or civic engagement.
The scholarship seeks to encourage and empower future leaders who embody the values of integrity, transparency, and community involvement - principles essential to good governance.
Candidates are considered based on their demonstrated interest in civic engagement, government and community development - shown through academic work, direct participation in local and state government processes, leadership roles, and related experiential learning opportunities.
- Amount: $5000
- Given annually each spring
- Scholarship funds are to be applied toward tuition, fees, or other educational expenses to Detroit Country Day School.
- The application deadline is Friday Feb 12, 2027.
- The Scholarship winner will be recognized at the Upper School Spring External Awards Assembly.
Eligibility Criteria
Applicants Must:
- Be a current Junior in good academic standing at Detroit Country Day School who does not have an honor code violation or significant disciplinary incident.
- Have demonstrated an interest in local government, public service, public affairs and public policy or civic leadership, such as:
- Student government, youth council, or city government programs.
- Volunteer or internship experience with local public offices or community boards.
- Coursework or independent projects related to civics or public policy.
- Have a minimum unweighted GPA of 3.0
- Demonstrate integrity and show respect for others.
- Submit at 500-750 word essay addressing "Identify one challenge your community faces and how you would propose to make a difference and address this challenge"
Lev Wood '74
Lev Wood ’74 established the Endowed Scholarship for Civic Engagement to encourage students to explore civics, government, and local public affairs in a meaningful way. Juniors at Detroit Country Day may compete for the $5,000 scholarship, which is applied toward senior-year tuition.
“Detroit Country Day gave me so much as a student,” Wood said. “Through this scholarship, I hope students develop the analytical skills and civic understanding needed to thoughtfully navigate our complex world.” He added, “With this scholarship, I’m putting my money where my heart is. My involvement in public affairs has given me a great deal, and this is my way of giving back.”
Wood has devoted much of his adult life to public service in the communities where he has lived. His volunteer work includes participation in local and national election campaigns, as well as service in numerous elected and appointed municipal positions. He currently serves as a City Council member in the City of Grosse Pointe Farms.
Wood is a graduate of the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs at Syracuse University. He also earned a Master of Public Administration from Wayne State University and holds a Master Citizen Planner certificate from Michigan State University Extension.
