DCDS Junior is Panelist for Conference at Columbia University

While working with mentally disabled children in India, Sonia Ahluwahlia '14, befriended Ishita Khemka, PhD, a professor from Columbia University. Sonia shared her experiences and insight working with the children. Professor Ishita Khemka was so impressed with that she invited Sonia to be her research assistant on a pilot study involving the differences in reactions to bullying in adolescents with and without autism.

The pilot study was recently finished and Sonia was invited as a panelist in an open forum conference to present her work and share her thoughts on the study. The official panel discussion was entitled: Inclusion of Adolescents with ASD and ID: Challenges in Friendships and Peer Relationships & Global Perspectives. The program is an ongoing project for Columbia University and the New York community. Sonia presented in front of over 200 professors, college students, and community members.

The next step will be for Sonia to meet again this summer with Dr. Khemka on a potential research project to further study the differences in perception of bullying and tools for kids to use during difficult situations. The goal will be to publish the research for which Sonia will be sited as a contributor. Dr. Khemke has commended Sonia for her contributions and recognized her insight as unique as generally this kind of research is done by doctoral students.

DCDS Women's Track & Field Wins 4th Consecutive Regionals

Congratulations to our women's track and field team for winning regionals for the fourth consecutive year! The men's team battle valiantly to earn third place overall. We also had 15 student-athletes qualify for the state meet.

State Finals Qualifiers include Bobby Charles '14, (Discus), Nick Ott '13 (1600m), Jordan Moore-Willis '14 (LJ), Kendall Baisden '13 (4x2, 4x1, 400m, 200m); Jackie Bredenberg '15 (1600m, 3200m); Jonell Nwabueze '13, Braya Hicks '15 & Amiya Alexander '16 (4x2, 4x1); Taylor Graffa '14 (400m, 4x4); Daniel Nascimento '13, Phillip Kovalev '14 & Kone Bowman '16 (4x4); Alexia Arthur '16 (300H, 4x4); and Anjali Sundar, '13 Tara Van Cleave '13, and Mia Berry '16 (4x4).

DCDS Student Places in the Top 17 at Intel International Science and Engineering Fair

Last week Anuush Vejalla '16 and Michael Shao '15 took part in the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair. There were over 1500 students competing from 70 countries. Michael's project placed in the top 17 overall and won first prize in animal sciences. Anuush won a special award in environmental science. Congratulations to both students! See website for results.

DCDS Senior Receives Gates Millennium Scholarship

Akua Achampong '13 is one of eight in the Detroit area to receive the coveted Gates Millenium Scholarship. The Gates Millennium Scholars (GMS) Program selects 1,000 talented students each year to receive a lifetime higher education scholarship to use at any college or university of their choice. The winners are also provided with personal and professional development through leadership programs along with academic support throughout their college career. DCDS Students Recognized in National and State Latin Exams

Congratulations to all the U/S students who received recognition for the 2013 National Latin Exam. Also, at the Michigan Junior Classical League Convention in April, 18 students took statewide testing in one of five subject areas: Mythology, Culture, Vocabulary, Derivatives, and Grammar.
