July 30, 2007 - Country Day families spearhead wagon drive for troops
Close to 20 Country Day families in addition to Girl Scout Troop 1111 and Webelos Pack 1024, came together to donate new and used Radio Flyer wagons. These wagons were sent to HMH-362 through Operation Troop TLC, an organization founded by Country Day mom, Dayle Hoffecker, and Operation Iraq Paq.
The Marine helicopter units stationed at the Al Asad Air Base in Iraq use these wagons to carry heavy repair parts across the helicopter maintenance yards. The following is a thank you letter from Iraq:
Dan (Captain Daniel Dowd),
I want to send out my deepest gratitude to yourself as well as all who were involved in the care packages sent to HMH-362. I believe I received them all, I didn't count them but there was a lot. I distributed all the items out to all the Marines from the squadron and they seemed very grateful. It seems there was a lot of work involved in this whole evolution. There is no amount of gratitude that I can express in words that will tell you how grateful we are for people like yourself. Again I thank you for all your contributions and I hope you have the opportunity to let all know who where involved that the marines at HMH-362 "Ugly Angels" are very grateful.
Sincerely,
Sgt Woode D.A.
HMH-362
Avionics Chief

May 25, 2007 - Country Day to conduct Radio Flyer wagon drive for troops overseas
Detroit Country Day School is linking up with Operation Iraq Paq to help send used Radio Flyer wagons to the Marine Helicopter Units stationed at the Al Asad Air Base in Iraq. A special request was made by Captain Daniel Dowd to help carry heavy repair parts across the helicopter maintenance yards:
"We have six maintenance shops that would make use of the wagons. In a perfect world they would have two or more wagons each. A dozen wagons was the goal we set. It is a lofty goal, but that would be in a "perfect world". A single wagon will have an immediate positive impact for our Marines. As an example, we have Hydraulic Servicing Units that can weigh 80lbs and are hand carried the 50-150 yards to the aircraft to perform routine maintenance. One or two wagons will make a huge impact for the Marines who haul gear like this to the aircraft.
Any blessings that come our way will be appreciated. Thank you for all the support, and please pass on our thanks to everyone who contributes. It goes a long way for the young Marines out here to get word from home that people care about what they are doing."
If you happen to have a used and unwanted Radio Flyer wagon sitting in your garage, please contact Dayle Hoffecker at: dayleellen@comcast.net or 248-538-8338.
Thank you for your kind and generous hearts!

May 11, 2007 - Senior continues his dominance as he takes first place at the National Junior Science and Humanities Symposium
Senior Amardeep Grewal is at it again; this time taking home first place at the National Junior Science and Humanities Symposium in Huntsville, Alabama. Current tubes are made of glass or ceramic, which do not allow for cell and growth factor migration, and require two surgeries (one to insert it and another to removed it). Amardeep's research has great promise in spinal chord injury repair.
With this win, Amardeep was awarded a $16,000 scholarship and an expense-paid trip to the London International Youth Science Forum (LIYSF) this summer, where more than 400 participants from 60 countries will attend. Congrats!

This message is intended to keep you up-to-date in regard to school operations. Our Middle School had a pipe leak in a second floor classroom which was discovered at approximately 5am this morning; our maintenance department immediately took steps to repair the pipe. Because the heating system is interconnected, the first floor science rooms were affected and the administration relocated the science classes to the student center and media center so that classes could continue. Students in gym classes are being shuttled between the Upper School gyms and the Middle School by bus with door-to-door service.
The decision not to close school was based on feedback from maintenance staff who said they could have the building up and running with adequate heat during and shortly after the arrival of students.
While Country Day normally closes school on snow days when Birmingham, Bloomfield and other area schools close, we do not have the same situation on low temperature days. We do not have students waiting out in the cold for buses or walking to school; therefore, it is not likely that we would close for temperature reasons.
As of 11:30am this morning, varsity and JV skiing and snowboarding are the only athletic practices/events that are cancelled because they are outdoor sports.February 1, 2007 - Country Day senior named Intel Science Talent Search finalist Congratulations go out to Sohan Venkat Mikkilineni who was named a finalist in the prestigious Intel Science Talent Search.
