Meet our Faculty

Detroit Country Day School’s faculty is one of our greatest resources. Our teachers are experienced and well trained to guide, support, and challenge each student in all academic areas, as well as in their social, emotional, and physical growth. Of the more than 194 teachers employed at Detroit Country Day School, 126 have earned master's degrees and 14 have earned doctorates. Our faculty continuously win awards in their disciplines, publish  research articles and studies, and many are nationally renowned experts in their fields.

Our faculty provide a safe and nurturing environment, and work with parents to benefit the education of every student. Caring collaborative relationships connect students, teachers, and parents, creating the many advantages of a Detroit Country Day School education.

Received an Award of Excellence in Teaching by Scholastic Arts.  He was the only teacher in the region to have four students receive national level awards from Scholastic Arts. The awards were two gold medals and two silver.

Elected to chair the Independent Schools division of the American Association of School Librarians which is part of the American Library Association.

 

Dr. Marc Fazio

Science

Awarded three Coach of the Year awards in swimming. The first was awarded by the Michigan Interscholastic Swim Coaches Association for men's Division 3 swimming. Then, the Southeastern Michigan Interscholastic Swim League also gave him double the honors by recognizing him for both men's and women's Division 3 swimming.

Recognized by the 2011 Michigan High School Football Coaches Association as Assistant Coach of the Year for his outstanding accomplishments in coaching football.

As a dedicated advisor to the school newspaper, The Day Times, he led the newspaper staff to produce a quality newspaper that garnered national recognition.  The paper received first place with special.

His poems were published in Springgun, an online literary magazine, in June of 2012.

 

Susan Wesslen
Middle School
Math

Led a Grade 6 math team at the National Math Pentathlon Tournament. The team had two of the only three students from Michigan awarded the "Hall of Fame" status.  This status is awarded for a perfect score in all five tournament games.

Her mentorship of Sidharth Chand '13 helped DCDS receive the silver medal at the International Chemistry Olympiad.

Published her first young adult novel, "What She Left Behind" through Simon Pulse/Simon & Schuster in May 2012.

 
 

Donna Rubin

Kindergarten

Published the children's book, "The Log Cabin Kitty" which is a historical tour of twelve cabins in a pioneer village in Fort Worth, Texas.  Donna hopes to be a visiting author with her cat puppet, Miz Pepper, sharing the pioneer tales to audiences of all ages.

Presented at the Michigan Social Studies Conference on "The Forgotten Real Heroes of the Revolutionary War."  He was also selected as a Summer Scholar for the Gilder Lehrman online course on the Civil War and Reconstruction.

 

Dr. Lynda Ludy

Grade 2

Presented at the annual meetings of the Michigan Academy of Science, Arts, and Letters at Alma College with Alma College Professor and Director of Early Childhood Education, Peggy Thelen. The presentation was titled "Yes! Early Learning Does Pave the Path to College Doors and Beyond." She is also a Charles A. Dana Professor Emeritus of Education at Alma College.

 

Joshua Osburn

Band

Granted the unique opportunity to participate at the Conductors' Retreat at Medomak located in Washington, ME with Maestro Kenneth Kiesler.  He was also the guest conductor of the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute Orchestra in performance at the new Experimental Media and Performing Arts Center.

 

Melissa Parks

Presented at the ISACS conference in fall 2011 in Detroit.  Her presentation was titled "Creative Arts with Mrs. Parks."
