Welcome to the Middle School

Welcome to Detroit Country Day Middle School where we strive to create a partnership with families and provide a caring, supportive environment for the young adolescent. The faculty and staff understand the unique needs and challenges of this age group. Programs are designed to channel the energy, capitalize on the curiosity, and guide the dynamic physical and cognitive growth inherent in the pre-teen/early teen student. Our Curriculum Guide reveals the wide array of offerings in the standard academic areas including computer science, English, history, mathematics, world language and science along with a full range of electives in physical education, fine arts and performing arts. The Middle School creates the foundation of skills and habits necessary for secondary education while helping each student to discover his or her particular talents and passions. While we strive to create a dignified atmosphere, multiple methods including significant amounts of "hands-on" and "student centered" activities create lively opportunities to find success for all types of learning styles while capitalizing on the natural energy of the age group. The technology program develops student computer application skills and prepares them for the world of quick communication that will continue to be part of their lives. Teachers are helping students to prepare for the future.

Students are offered many opportunities to learn outside of the classroom. They become part of a diverse student body that represents many different cultural and religious backgrounds. An assembly program offers frequent special programs including presentations by authors, artists, scientists, and peer performers. Field trips, social activities and a variety of experiences in the Clubs Program enrich the daily lives of the students.

We work with parents to help students develop good character. All students are encouraged to practice the tenets of the Honor Covenant which include Respect, Responsibility, Honesty, and Good Judgment. Each student is guided by a faculty member through the Advisory Program where they not only have individual attention but also feel a sense of "family" in the small advisory groupings. Communication with parents is considered an important element of the school community. Parents and teachers work together to create a network of support for students. The C.A.R.E, Program offers the opportunity for students to receive correct and current information as they explore important health, social, and developmental issues. Character Education is also enhanced through Community Service. Additional offerings to explore how to live a healthy, positive life are provided in substantial ways in the curriculum. Students are given guidance and counseling as they learn how to develop good interpersonal and decision making skills. They are encouraged to recognize what is healthy behavior in themselves and others, to take responsibility for their actions and words, and to make good choices.

While we cherish the best of traditional educational practices, our faculty strives to remain current and innovative. They bring ample experience and expertise in their field. They understand how to encourage the development of critical thinking. They are committed to the Mission and Guiding Principles of the school, the Middle School Philosophy and the Middle School Goals . They participate in "educating the whole child" through the many roles they fulfill at the school as teachers, advisors, coaches, and friends. Most importantly they demonstrate good humor, a love of children, and the joy that comes from watching them grow, develop, and reach their potential. Each teacher understands the age group and knows how to help students to successfully navigate middle level education and their young lives.

The school admits students regardless of race, color, national or ethnic origin, age, sex, height, weight or disability.
